What represents a good MC, to you?

When I was asked to be one of the Master of Ceremonies for the Istanbul International Dance Festival, I was excited and super nervous. From watching other seasoned MCs, I knew it involved more than just announcing the names of the performers.

Things to consider as an MC

It involves hyping up the performers, entertaining the audience when there are delays backstage, and keeping the audience awake and energetic before, between, and after a performance. In addition to that, there are subtle things to consider: how you walk out on stage, how you stand, how you hold the mic, where you look, the intonation in your voice, how to pronounce names, how long you spend on stage, how to insert comedy, how to kill time, etc.

Many things I wasn’t quite aware of until I had to do them. Fortunately, I had the guidance of my co-emcee and my Naked and Counting Podcast co-host, Leon Rose. I still made plenty of mistakes. Hopefully, no one noticed.

“And next…”

The truth is, emceeing is not just about saying “and next…” especially if you’re required to go out ON stage. I haven’t emceed enough to get creative with how I fill that time. But through watching other emcees, I know those creative attempts can be a hit or miss, regardless of how well-intentioned they may be (which they usually are).

Masters of Ceremony:

  • Have you ever had to emcee?
  • What was the hardest part?
  • Have you ever made a mistake? How did you fix it?

For my audience members:

  • What do you think is the role of an emcee?
  • Do you prefer to just hear names of performers or do you enjoy an entertaining emcee
  • Have you ever been offended by something an emcee said? If so, what?
